EMMA'S BLOG
We learned the seven concepts of media, shortened to 'IRACING'. Each letter stands for a word, in the order institution, representation, audience, construction, ideology, narrative and genre.
Institution
A formal organization (with its own set of rules and behaviours) that creates and distributes media texts. Since we are doing horror in media, I have looked at famous horror ones like HammerHouse and Twisted Pictures.

Representation
It is the way things are shown in the media. For example, there are not many black actors, and in horror films, it is normally the 'busty blonde' that dies. This impacts us because it can change the way we perceive people.

Audience
This is the type of people that your film is made for. There are 4 different groups; Age, Social Class, Culture and Gender. The is film is made for a certain type of audience, and the groups show the types of people it is aimed for.

Construction
This is the place where the movie filmed. It needs to be the right setting, for example, a horror that is filmed in the middle of a huge city isn't going to be very scared. The best horrors are where the characters are isolated, like in a big mansion or out camping in the woods.

Ideology
This is the meaning behind the media text, or the secret ( or not so secret) agenda of the creators of the movie.

Narrative
This is the story of the film. It must have a story-line, otherwise it won't make sense and your audience would be very confused.

Genre
This is the type of film it is. There are loads of types of genres, for example action, si-fi, comedy and romance. The genre we are doing, of course, is horror. There are even more sub-genres, which follow after a main genre like horror. Some of the sub-genres for horror can be slasher, zombie and supernatural. These go into more detail about the type of horror it is. You get sub-genres for every genre too.

180 DEGREE CAMERA RULE
Today we learned about the 180 degree camera rule. It refers to keep the camera with an 180 degrees of two people being filmed. It is often used when two people are having a conversation. It is very important not to break this rule, because if you do then it will confuse the audience, especially in a chase scene, conversation or sport. The camera must always be on one side of the line.
Crossing over the line when filming over the shoulder shots shifts the person's eye line, meaning that the person's eye lines do not match. It makes them look as if they are facing the opposite direction. Results of breaking the rule is that the audience becomes confused and loses focus, it becomes disorientated, and then you miss vital parts of the film. |
When a stranger calls
We watched the opening of 'When A Stranger Calls' (1979) to show how Scream and other famous films based their openings on that one. We then watched two OTS of other media students and how they also based theirs on 'When A Stranger Calls'. We were given a lot of ideas from watching these on our own OTS, and how we can use other classic horror film opening sequences to our advantage to get tips and ideas off them.

IDEAS
Dolls
One of our ideas is dolls. Many people have a fear of creepy dolls, and because of this dolls would be a good thing to use. They have become especially popular in horror movies, since in 'The Conjuring' (2013) featured a doll names 'Annabelle', people were hyped for a film about the doll which then followed in the film 'Annabelle' (2014) where we got to see the horrific doll in her own movie. Due to these movies' success, we would like to include some creepy dolls. |
