OPENING TITLE ANALYSIS
Sinister
Sinister use a old projector and film reel to create a spine chilling effect. In the beginning there are people with nooses around there neck, if you look carefully you can see theres a saw which slowly cuts the tree branch. This is effective because they build the clip up very slowly and at the end they freeze it and add the because the people are dead and still. There isn't any music theres just noises of the camera and faint screams, this is effective because you think somethings go to make you just but its just a title. In are OTS we will definitely include this to add the effect your never safe. Insidious (2010) is very different to Sinister because they use still images and quite but terrifying music. They also use a small clip at the begin of the demon where as in Sinister you don't see anyone except the people being hung.

The Grudge
|
The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage or extreme sorrow . The curse is an entity created where the person died. Those who encounter this evil supernatural force die and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passed from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror.
In the opening sequence of the Grudge they use a wide range of angle shots and an wide range of movement with the camera. With our opening sequence we will be defiantly be using a range of angles and shots as it helps build suspense and hooks the audience. Also in the Grudge they use music to help build suspense making the music louder and louder making the audience feel something is about to happen. (FL) |
The Women in Black
The Women in black was released in 2008 and is about a young lawyer who travels to a remote village and discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned women is terrorising the locals. In the opening title sequence the mood is set- something is terribly wrong.
+ it contained a lot of shadows, + unclear vision + leaves you confused and wanting to know ore + slow motion + there is an outline of a figure but you cant see what it is + killing of innocent children brings the audience closer + there is always an item or prop used + the sound is enhanced In our opening title sequence, i want to include the same type of music. I want it to be calm, but creepy and build up to when something is about to happen. (EB) |

The Ring
|
The Ring is a 2002 American psychological horror film, A young journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone in a week of viewing it. In The Ring it uses a wide range of angle shots, for instance when the girl is walking up to her bedroom door it only shows her legs and feet, it also shows a puddle of water that is coming from her room, this makes the audience feel anticipation, espacially with the help of the music getting more tense when she reachers her door. This is a good effect when filming a horror film, and we will incorporate this into our opening title sequence to help build suspense.
The opening sequence of The Ring, is very similar to the opening sequence of The Grudge, both sequences share similar camera angle shots and both share similar lighting. In our opening sequence we will use similar techniques. (FL) |
THEM
Them was released in 2006 and is originally a french film called 'Ils'. It is about a group of hooded assailants that begin to terrorise this couple in the middle of night, out in the country. The opening title sequence consists of a girl and her mother who's car breaks down. Both of them are females, and it is set in an isolated country road at midnight whilst it is raining. This gives a feeling of being alone, and is very typical of a horror for it to be raining at night. This builds tension because you know something bad is going to happen. As the girl's mother goes to fix the car, she disappears and the girl is left alone in the car. Then the car begins to get hit with balls of mud, and the girl is unable to contact the police due to no phone signal. She then gets killed in the car, but we don't see the killers.

DexterIn the opening title sequence of Dexter all the shots have connotations of murder and blood, this makes the audience feel uneasy. The main colours used in the sequence are red and black giving the audience an uneasy feeling of danger and darkness as red is symbolic of blood and black is symbolic of mystery and death. The use of everyday activities being used to symbolise murder is creative and effective in unsettling the audience as it shows how dangerous Dexter is.

The Girl with the dragon tattoo
In the opening title sequence of the girl with the dragon tattoo the use of black colour creates a feeling of mystery and death. The close ups of the dark ink running over different surfaces coating the objects in a sticky black solution give the audience a suffocating uneasy feeling. Apart from black the only other main colour used is the red of the fire, giving the audience the feeling of danger as fire is viewed as a dangerous uncontrollable force similar to the unstoppable force of the ink this gives the audience a feeling of vulnerability.
